For the past twenty-five years, Dr. Kishore Kuncham has been serving the students and community as a recognized leader and visionary in education. Throughout his career, he has been a champion of quality education for all students. He is a transformative educational leader who believes in the power of our schools to improve the lives of our children.  Dr. Kuncham is also an innovator in fiscal management and accountability, and a proponent of a strong school-parent-community partnership.

During his tenure as Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent of Schools in Freeport, one of the largest districts in New York State, Dr. Kuncham has created a platform of world class opportunities and achieved the highest graduation rate in the past several decades. The district’s science research program has produced contenders in the national Siemens Math, Science & Technology Competition. Extensive Educational support systems have been created for students before school, during the school day, after school, and summers. His fiscal prudence and long-term planning earned the district a Standard and Poor’s bond rating of “AA” which is among the top six districts rated by Standard and Poor’s in the state.  In addition, the District’s budgets have provided for a tax decrease six times in the past 11 years and the past four years in a row.

Dr. Kuncham’s leadership role also extends beyond the school district. He serves on the Board of Governors of NYSIR (New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal) and is the Past President of REFIT (Reform Educational Finance Inequities Today).  He is Past President of NYBEST (New York Benefits for Educators and Student Trust) and he continues as a member of the Board of Directors.  He serves on the Board of United Way of Long Island and on the Cradle of Aviation Museum’s Advisory Board. Dr. Kuncham has earned the prestigious Outstanding Superintendent of the Year Award for 2016 from the state-wide NYASBO (New York Association of School Business Officials) and is the recipient of the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award as one of the most influential people in public education. The Long Island Elected Officials Federation at the Somos El Futuro Long Island Black-Brown Alliance also named Dr. Kuncham as Superintendent of the Year for 2016.

Dr. Kuncham earned the Parent Teacher Association’s (PTA) highest award, the New York State PTA Distinguished Service Award. The Salvation Army awarded him the Citizen of the Year Award and Freeport’s Rotary recognized him with the Civic Leadership Award.  The International Association of School Business Officials honored Dr. Kuncham with the renowned International Eagle Award, the highest and most prestigious international award for Chief Financial Officers. He was honored as a Star Network King of Long Island in 2017. Dr. Kuncham was a keynote speaker at the prestigious International Conference for School Education in Delhi in 2018.

Known as an outstanding role model who exhibits a passion for excellence in every aspect of his work, Dr. Kuncham is an extremely loyal friend, colleague and humanitarian who spends countless hours each year in raising funds for the needy and worthy causes. An advocate for peace and non-violence, for the past ten years, he has initiated numerous events commemorating peace. These include annual Peace concerts, Peace March and Peace Walks, one of which led the community on a multi-day 131 mile Peace Walk. He introduced the daily practice of mindfulness, yoga and guided breathing into the Freeport Schools. Dr. Kuncham leads with the interest of children at heart. It can truly be said that over the past two decades, he has been the chief architect of the Freeport Schools.

Dr. Kuncham is the first Indian American School Superintendent in the history of New York State. In addition to his doctorate, Dr. Kuncham holds a Law Degree, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a professional diploma in Educational Administration. He is married to Raji Kuncham and they have two sons. Bharat graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Siddharth graduated from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania.
